Bee venom and royal jelly: what the hive delivers to your skin

You may have come across bee venom in premium skincare and wondered whether it is actually worth the attention, or whether it is simply an unusual-sounding ingredient riding a wave of curiosity. It turns out to be something more interesting than either. When formulated at the right concentrations alongside royal jelly and Mānuka honey, bee venom communicates directly with the skin cells responsible for collagen and elastin production. Not at the surface level, and not through temporary plumping. At a cellular level, where the real structural work happens.

What happens when bee venom meets your skin

Bee venom, or apitoxin, is not a simple irritant. It is a highly organized mixture of peptides, enzymes, and biologically active compounds, each with a specific and measurable effect on skin tissue.

Melittin is the most abundant component, accounting for 40–50% of bee venom’s dry weight.[1] It binds to the outer membrane of dermal fibroblasts and creates a controlled disruption: the skin reads the signal as minor damage and responds by upregulating collagen and elastin synthesis. The inflammatory response is micro-scale and transient. The structural repair it initiates is cumulative.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), present at roughly 12% of dry weight, works alongside melittin by temporarily modifying the extracellular matrix.[1] This loosens the intercellular space and increases the penetration depth of co-applied actives, including the Hyaluronic Acid formulated directly into both the Eternal Renewal Face Serum and the Eternal Renewal Eye Serum.

Apamin, a neurotoxic peptide at 2–3%, acts on calcium-dependent potassium channels in smooth muscle cells. It reduces the micro-contractions responsible for expression lines. The effect is subtle and directional: not a medical paralysis, but a measurable softening at the skin surface with consistent use.[1]

These three compounds do not work in isolation. They work as a system. Which is why the formulation surrounding them matters as much as the apitoxin itself.

Royal jelly: the second signal

Bee venom stimulates the fibroblast. Royal Jelly equips it to respond.

Royal jelly is the only known natural source of 10-Hydroxy-2-Decenoic Acid (10-HDA), a fatty acid that directly stimulates fibroblast proliferation and upregulates the gene expression of collagen type I.[2] It does not duplicate what bee venom does. It converges on the same cellular target from a different angle: bee venom creates the repair signal; 10-HDA supplies the biochemical conditions for the fibroblast to act on it.

Beyond 10-HDA, the supporting ingredients in the Eternal Renewal Face Cream formula extend this repair architecture. Panthenol (vitamin B5) converts in the skin to pantothenic acid, which accelerates keratinocyte migration and is a cofactor in lipid synthesis essential to barrier repair. Tocopherol (vitamin E) is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects newly synthesized collagen from oxidative degradation, extending the structural improvements that bee venom and royal jelly initiate.

Propolis Cera (propolis wax), present in all four Eternal Renewal formulas, provides the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial environment in which this repair can proceed without interference. A resinous compound produced by bees to seal and protect the hive, propolis has well-documented broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties. In cosmetic formulation, it reduces the low-grade inflammation that would otherwise degrade barrier integrity and accelerate visible aging.

How the three hive ingredients work in synergy

The third pillar of the Eternal Renewal line is Mānuka honey, sourced from New Zealand’s endemic Leptospermum scoparium trees and graded at MGO 800+. Mel (Mānuka Honey MGO 800+) appears in all four formulas.

MGO, or methylglyoxal, is the compound that distinguishes Mānuka honey from other honeys. It delivers two functions that bee venom and royal jelly cannot provide alone. First, it creates a moisture-rich, biocompatible matrix that stabilizes the delivery of the more sensitive active compounds. Second, its documented antimicrobial activity maintains a skin surface environment that discourages the bacterial activity driving chronic inflammation, and chronic inflammation is one of the primary accelerators of collagen breakdown.

The combination of all three addresses the same target, the dermal fibroblast and the collagen it produces, through three simultaneous mechanisms: stimulation (bee venom), nutritional support (royal jelly and 10-HDA), and environmental control (Mānuka honey MGO 800+ and propolis).

The 2025 Cureus study that validated this combination used the exact formulation of the Eternal Renewal Face Serum with Bee Venom. Results were assessed using both dermatologist grading and Optic Elite optical analysis. The improvements observed from Week 2 were not self-reported. They were measured.[3]

Reading the Eternal Renewal formulas

The four products in the Eternal Renewal line share the same core hive trio and diverge deliberately in their supporting actives.

The Eternal Renewal Face Serum adds Iris Florentina Root Extract (Florentine iris root), which contributes isoflavones that support collagen synthesis, alongside Rosa Multiflora Fruit Extract (multiflora rose fruit), a polyphenol-rich extract with antioxidant and brightening activity.

The Eternal Renewal Eye Serum replaces these with actives calibrated for the periorbital zone. Hieracium Pilosella Extract (hawkweed) is an astringent traditionally used to reduce puffiness around the eyes. Bellis Perennis Flower Extract (daisy flower) contributes tyrosinase-inhibiting activity relevant to dark circle pigmentation.

The Eternal Renewal Face Cream builds the occlusive layer needed to seal the serum’s active phase overnight. Butyrospermum Parkii (shea butter), Olea Europaea Oil (olive oil), and Cera Alba (beeswax) form a lipid-rich barrier matrix. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (aloe vera leaf juice) provides immediate soothing hydration.

These are not interchangeable products. Each addresses a distinct part of the same collagen renewal process.

Building the routine

Apply the Eternal Renewal Face Serum morning and evening to clean, dry skin before moisturizer. Because phospholipase A2 temporarily increases skin permeability, mineral SPF is a non-negotiable morning step applied over the serum. The eye serum is applied with a gentle tapping motion around the orbital bone: the periorbital skin is thin enough that dragging it causes more damage than the product can repair. The face cream is most effective in the evening, sealing the serum’s active phase during the period of peak nocturnal cell renewal.

A mild tingling on first application is expected. It indicates that the melittin is reaching the fibroblast layer and is not a sign of irritation. If persistent redness develops, reduce frequency to every other evening and build tolerance gradually.

One note on allergy: bee venom in certified cosmetic formulations is highly purified and used at concentrations well within dermatological safety thresholds. Individuals with a documented IgE-mediated bee sting allergy should consult a physician before use. That is a distinct condition from general skin sensitivity and should not be confused with it.
